RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

Steve,
Very cool pictures of one MONSTER hitch - I AM ENVIOUS :B...
Here's a picture of my 10K on my 250SD (when I had it)... Note that the I-Beam is a dual section on the 10K and also note that the end of the draw bar is bent in a upward fashion to increase ground clearance... Maybe a talk with Pullrite is in order to see if they can supply you with a draw bar that is pivoted up in this fashion...

RE: Forest River city water inlet (dangerous location)

Yeah, kinda makes you wonder about the designers/engineers doesn't it... My fresh water fill is on the street side of my TT right at the front of the TT just behind the pass-thru compartment but my city water connection is at the extreme rear of the TT right in the middle of the rear cap :R - yeah, that makes a lot of sense :E ...
When we camped at Happy Holiday in the Smokies a few years back, if I had this trailer then I would have had to crawl out over the creek we were parked next too as the TT rear hung slightly over the bank of the creek...
I'll tell ya, some of these guys are dumber than a box of rocks !!!

RE: BAL stabilizer in center of TT

One of the things we have been looking into (myself, JBarca, Crappie_Fisherman, BarneyS, and Turk2500) is reinstalling the corner stabilizers on a 45 degree angle... Earlier this year when we were all camping together, JBarca and Crappie_Fisherman (John and Joe) toured thru a TT when they were at the RV Museum in Elkhart... They both commented that the TT was rock solid even with uneven terrain... They both observed that the stabilizers on the TT were mounted at a 45 degree angle to the frame... We've discussed this a great deal but none of us have had the time to experiment and reposition our stabilizers to a 45 degree angle...
My DW also commented that perhaps movement in the slide out areas (we have 2 slides on the same side) is torquing the trailer frame and we're getting movement there... This thought has merit as well and I am going to try stabilizers under the slides too, but just haven't got around to experimenting yet...
The JT's look like they have some merit which is commented on in the above post but they tend to be pricey and I have heard both pros and cons on their stability... I may try to build my own this coming summer if time permits and see just how much good they do...

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

Good deal Steve - I looked on the PR web site but it said call for price... I assume your getting the 20K version??? That is one big hitch...
As I mentioned before I have towed with both the PR and the Hensley (currently own the Hensley) and I feel that the PR is the superior hitch for overall stability...
I have been "bumped" by the Hensley 2 times and one of those times almost resulted in a loss of control of the tow vehicle... When your towing a TT that is close to #10,000, and it smacks the rear end of the truck, you really feel it... In my case, it was wet and I was on a slight crown of the road changing lanes so there was a little turn input dialed into the truck... That smack from the TT lifted the rear of the truck and it was pretty dicey for a bit trying to regain control...
That is why I say the PR is the superior hitch because of the lack of bump no matter how the brake controller is dialed in... I completely rewired my trailer brake system to help overcome this situation and readjusted my Jordan controller to lead the truck brakes by a fair amount, HOWEVER there is always that little nagging thought in my mind that it happened twice and it could happen again, usually downhill, in a turn and perhaps when it's wet...
I like the Hensley for it's maneuvering ability, especially when docking my TT at home because quarters are tight and this maneuver was considerably more difficult with the PR, but I have NEVER, repeat NEVER, had any twitch, glitch, bump or any other phenomenon with the PR when I was towing with it...
So far, after rewiring and readjusting my brake controller, I haven't had any problems but I just flat don't trust the Hensley and the bump condition... I know a lot of guys say they have never experienced it, but I'm here to tell ya if you do, and especially with a 10K trailer, it will scare the bejesus out of you and you will think twice about stability and the Hensley severe under braking conditions...
My comments and thoughts for what they're worth...

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

Steve,
Did the PR go up in price :H It was always cheaper than the Hensley UNLESS your talking about the 20K version and that is just a hundred or two dollars more... But that is not a true comparison as the 20K Pullrite has MUCH MORE capacity than either the PP or HA...
I paid about $1200 for mine when I bought it new but that was before PR had their big price increase... Last time I checked, the 10K was still about $200 cheaper than the Hensley... The ProPride would be a bit cheaper but I don't think the HA is unless prices have changed...

RE: Good price on F250 V10?

Although the Dodge would be a real temptation with the Cummins diesel I think I'd go for the Ford because of the Crew Cab configuration... I'm a little pregidous as I drive a V10 now but the Ford sounds like a nice truck... I wish I had a Crew Cab rather than a Super cab but the crew cab would not have fit in my garage...
My V10 is a 2V version but I have a full Banks Kit on it and if you can believe the Banks specs, I'm making about 370 HP and near 500 lb feet of torque and it sure feels like it... The newer 3V versions of the V10 are just about at that level already...
I hear good things about the Cummins but for me a gasser works better because my truck's use is almost exclusively towing the trailer and diesel fuel is near a dollar a gallon more in my area...
My opinion FWIW :W ...

RE: TV Manufacturers' Definition of "Tongue Weight Rating"

There are so many different variables to this question depending on make and model of tow vehicle (notice I didn't say truck) I personally don't think you'll ever get it answered... Some of the variables would be different manufacturers, different frames, different receivers, different attachment methodologies, etc, etc,... Is this something you really need to know for your rig or are you just creating a topic of conversation for arguments sake (trolling) :H

RE: EZ Connector---my wiring problems are sloved

I'd be a little leary unless I knew what the spec was in holding force of the magnets... It's also a bit pricy at 100 bucks for the connector...
Still - it's nice to see interconnect technology improving...

RE: sway bars are they worth it?

The Pro-Pride and Hensley are the best way to go; the Pullrite just behind them.
Actually - you have that reversed... I have towed with both the Pullrite and the Hensley and the Pullrite is the better of the two...
I haven't towed with the ProPride but since it is essentially another 4 bar linkage hitch I will assume that the it is about the same as the Hensley...

RE: Winterizing in warm climate???

Yeah, your climate is warm enough that you probably needn't worry BUT if it looks like a hard freeze coming with sustained freezing temps then I would pull some antifreeze thru the lines or minimally blow out the water lines with compressed air and put a cupful or two of antifreeze in the P-traps below the sink and shower...

BTW folks - so far nothing out of line - humerous - I dropped a brass hose nozzle in the Black tank not too long ago - don't ask how I did that and how I retrived it :E - I'll let the thread run as long as it doesn't get nasty and doesn't erode to bad taste - - - - OR until "java" sends me the money :W :W :W

RE: Water Tank Sizes ?

And having had 2 Skylines myself, I suspect the 36 gallon fresh water capacity also includes the hot water tank...
If you can get to the tank to measure it, you can calculate the capacity by taking (length X width X height) in inches divided by 231 and that will give you capacity in gallons... Not exact because of the thickness of the tank but close enough for calculating...

RE: equalizer brand hitch

I'm not familiar with the hitch design but could you use a longer bolt and then one of those lock nuts with the nylon insert - once tightened they don't move but the bolt would need to be long enough to engage the nylon insert of the nut...

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

Barney's DW made a pattern for our Hensley covers and it circulated amongst many RV.Net forum members before finally coming back to Barney... I still have the original cover my wife sewed up from Barney's DW's pattern :B... I already had the material for the project so our cost was pretty much nil :B

RE: Hensley Arrow Right For Us or Too Complicated?

Mike,
Kudos to you for looking at a better hitch... I disagree with the "money to burn" comment though... The Reese Dual Cam and the Equal-i-zer are great hitches and do a great job but the truth of the matter is they are just another form of friction sway control... The DC accomplishes this by the detents on it's cams and the equal-i-zer does it by friction points at the hitch head where the bars attach...
The Hensley and ProPride are of the converging linkage design or sometimes know as 4 bar linkage... There is another hitch you may want to look into and it is called the Pullrite Hitch... Essentially, it is a 5th wheel hitch UNDER the truck... Oh and BTW - I also drive a F-250 (V-10) and I believe your GVWR is #8800 and not the #7700 you specified... Check me out on that by looking at the sticker on your b-pillar on the drivers side door...
With the size and weight trailer your looking at I think you would do well with either the Pullrite, Hensely, or Propride... The Reese and Equal-i-zer will work for you but in my personal opinion driving almost an identical rig, I would recommend the PR or DC or Equal-i-zer... My first choice would be the PR... I have towed with both the Hensley and Pullrite and I consider the PR to be the better of the two... If you want details, PM me as my dissertation on this will be too long for this post... Or you can do a search on PR or Hensley and you'll find my comments in those posts...
And finally, there is nothing complicated or intricate about the Hensley, equal-i-zer or even PR install... They are just different from each other... Hookup on these hitches is not difficult but just different... I can hook my Hensley just as fast as I could hook my PR - just took a little time to learn the different technique...
Good luck with which ever you choose...
